Global / Local

Within the Local community, I believe this business will serve as an influential environment for creativity, add an aspect of diversity-opportunity within the local economy and art scene. Also as a nonprofit, I hope to become a 501(c)(3) organization through offering a youth summer art workshop for 20 kids of which five will be scholared from our nonprofit.

On a global scale, I slowly hope to address the misrepresentation of artists; positively influence the networking between emerging artists; break the hierarchy of ‘high-end’ art; and hopefully, make artworks more affordable.

Curricular Itinerary

With my animating question in mind, I have spoken with an art professor and several students regarding the process of developing a career as an artist and gallery owner. In the future, I plan to intern and communicate with other established artists and gallery owners over the summer and ask them how they felt as they were making their debuts. I would like to find out from them how art dealers, art investors, art collectors, and artists themselves manipulate the marketing of art. It would also be beneficial to work in an art gallery to ‘learn the ropes’, access influential contacts, and gain insight on the do’s and don’t’s within the industry. In the fall, I plan to study abroad in Barcelona; so I am hopeful to learn more about art history and the art market in Europe as well.

I have taken classes in art history, studio art, and finance/business; all of which have contributed to me forming a more coherent understanding of their connections and how they are intercorrelated in the art world. The culmination of the classes has led me toward a greater focus and understanding of options for my future career. Going forward here at Connecticut College, my goal is to declare an Art History Minor or Major adding to my already declared Art Major and Finance Minor; as I am aware that knowledge of older Art is very pertinent to the guidance of modern art today. Overall, speaking and networking with art influencers, as well as learning the most I can about the art world’s present and past, I hope to open my own creative space to positively impact artists and preserve the image of raw art.

Animating Question

How can I help other artists further develop their career and brand recognition toward peak affluence? Also, how can I do the same for myself yielding a profit and remain motivated and fulfilled in doing it?

Due to the inadequate exposure for young/upcoming artists, high competition for gallery space, and limited spaces for accommodating studio art; I am in the process of developing a business plan for an art gallery and studio to support and represent emerging artists on the creative and lucrative aspects of art. Through my business, I hope to create an influential space of inspiration for personal success and well-being. As well as break the corrupted hierarchy among art prices and prestige for more economic equality.

In this business, artists will make their works, collaborate/inspire each other, expand upon their skill sets, and learn about everything it takes to get their work from the studio to the gallery. Through networking and spreading awareness of our business, I hope to entertain and enlighten customers of our mission as a sort of art guild.

I have been speaking with an architect about creating a virtual landscape and interior design of the business model. With this finished prototype, I will gain feedback from art enthusiasts ranging from artists and gallery owners to art investors.

About

I am an undergraduate student, studying Art as a major, and Finance as a minor. My goal is to help artists establish themselves through both the creative and financial sides of art production and dealing. In the summer of 2019, I started to explore the art world for the first time from the financial viewpoint, as I had my first couple of exhibitions. Coming from just producing art for exposure and the gratification of recognition, I was confused when forced to put a price on my works. I was told by the art gallerists that I was setting the price too low and should set a higher value for art which would, in turn, create a higher respect factor for me as an artist. I was perplexed and realized many other emerging artists may feel the same way when first emerging into the art market. Many unexpected transitions are made in the art industry, especially in the beginning as an artist moves from the studio/workspace to the gallery. Therefore, I hope to assist artists in their progression from the art world to the financial world through my nonprofit co-op.
